We hope you all are enjoying the brighter evenings as much as we are and the feeling of Spring being just around the corner. On Friday 2nd we will have Joyce Fitzpatrick speaking at our Virtual Café about preparing your gardens and flowerpots for springtime to feel free to come along and learn how to have a “bloomin” good start to the warmer months! Early Bird Tickets and Submission Extension - 16th International Dementia Conference

On 1st February we will be launching the Early Bird Tickets for our upcoming International Dementia Conference held in Mullingar on the 8th and 9th of May 2024.

Also, due to popular request, we have extended the deadline for submissions for abstracts, interactive sessions, demonstrations, and posters.  The application form is available to download on our website and you have until noon on 14th Feb to apply.

Creative Brain Week 4th - 9th March

Creative Brain Week returns this March bringing with it a ‘heady’ mix of leading neuroscientists, educationalists, health policy makers, artists and innovators! Their 2024 themes are Attention, Connection and Love. These themes were chose to enable artists and scientists, people with lived experience and practitioners to bring the best knowledge and expertise from across disciplines, to address the challenges of non-communicable diseases like Alzheimer's, and complex issues like brain health, poverty and environmental impact. Sensory Modulation to Enrich and Expand Activities

This workshop will explore:

·         What sensory modulation is and how it relates to the lives of those living with dementia in contrast to the typical changes that occur with ageing

·         Adapting and expanding your activity programme without increasing your budget

·         The research showcasing the benefits of using sensory-enriching activities personalised to the needs of those living with dementia

·         How to identify passive behaviours and displays of sensory needs, in particular where communication barriers may be present

·         Assessing the appropriate, respectful, and practical application of sensory- and needs-specific activity adaptations within a group care setting, where different stages of dementia are present

 

Sonas Programme Training

Our well known Sonas course enables healthcare workers and others working with people living with dementia to qualify as a Sonas Programme Licensed Practitioner (SPLP). This 3-day programme has been designed to facilitate engagement and enjoyment for people with dementia. It involves stimulation of all five senses, gentle exercise, relaxing music, singalongs and memory-focused exercises. These techniques have been shown to enhance the mood, well-being and communication of people living with dementia.

 

 

Life Enriching Ways Through Late Stage Dementia

Delivered by Joyce Fitzpatrick, this enriching course is suitable for healthcare assistants, and all persons supporting those in late stage dementia.

The course will cover

  • Dementia Care Mapping – learn to identify personal needs at this stage of life

  • Alzheimer Observational Tool

  • Rhythm, Melody and Harmony – using the senses to enrich interactions

  • Terminal Lucidity – connecting to the end

  • Coma Touch – providing comfort and being present

  • Privacy, Confidentiality, and Consent
