Meet the Tutor: Joyce Fitzpatrick!

Hello, please introduce yourself:

Hello! Joyce Fitzpatrick here from www.inspiredbynature.ie

I have been interested in people and nature and the connection between the two for many years, and am qualified in social and therapeutic horticulture which I apply to my work with older adults for improving quality of life.

How long have you been working with Engaging Dementia?

I have been working with Engaging Dementia for 15 years, in many parts of Ireland, training staff in activities, lecturing, setting up gardens, dealing with challenging situations, and have delivered courses in person and remotely in Seasonal Activities and Flourishing after the pandemic.

Tell us a little about your newest course "Life Enriching Ways Through Late Stage Dementia" :

This course is to let people discover what late stage dementia feels like, and how to make it a time which is rich, varied, rewarding and relaxing.

What is your favourite part about teaching?

I love to teach special skills to those who go out of their way to improve life for others, and who see how both the carer and patient benefit from this quality of care.

I have much experience in my professional and private life to know how getting it right can restore dignity and bring joy back through small changes.

Finally, what are your goals for the year ahead?

To continue advocating for improvements for older people especially regarding access to places of interest and engagement, and connections with other people, plants and wildlife.
